The SmartStart Program is designed for Primary School students, from Year 3 to 7, experiencing challenges in ACHIEVING adequate levels of Literacy and Numeracy skills.

The program consists of a dynamic series of lessons/ workshops that enhance the achievement of Literacy and Numeracy skills. The program, ALSO, focuses on promoting positive attitudes and aspirations as well as developing personal and learning management skills within Literacy and Numeracy skill learning contexts.

Foundation Skills 

Literacy and numeracy skills create a solid foundation for developing personal and social skills that maximise one's capabilities and ensure the best future possible.

The confidence with which young people adapt to, interact with and manipulate today's highly developed and technological environment is a true indication of their incredible level of intelligence. Is a child who is in a 'Special Learning ' group at school and then goes home to play complex computer games adults find difficult to understand, learning impaired? Evidence of children's amazingly efficient learning abilities lies in how quickly they master one of the most complex skills to learn - oral language. Psychologists are still baffled by the complexity of strategies used to 'get their way'. All of this without any formal education.

Having difficulties with reading, writing or mathematics?

Basic literacy skills are extremely essential for confident learning, keeping up with study demands and maximising opportunities for career choices.

Studies have demonstrated that literacy and numeracy are essential ingredients for effective communication and participation in adult life.

Students who achieve high levels of literacy and numeracy during the compulsory years of schooling are more likely than lower-achieving students to stay on to complete Year 12 and enter higher education. Making a successful transition from school to full-time employment, the type of occupation obtained, and earnings are positively related to literacy and numeracy.

Learning difficulties are not always directly related to poor achievement of school subjects. The cause isn't always the inability to learn Literacy and Numeracy skills. A headache isn’t always a sign the brain’s at fault.

There can be quite a number of reasons why students are experiencing learning challenges including lack of self-confidence, self-esteem, health or social issues. Studies have shown that lack of confidence and motivation has a large influence on a student's achievement. Any program to address efficient learning at school should address those variables.

All of us have the capacity to do well. Often what’s needed is the right tools for the job.
